Politicians Will Say Anything

I got a big kick out of North County Times article about Superintendent O’Connell’s fund raiser to kick off his campaign to retain his job as Superintendent of Public Instruction.

At the Shadowridge Country Club near San Diego, he talked about how much progress he’s made in improving California education. Has he looked at our test scores lately? Has he looked at the list of schools and districts that are in program improvement?

Among the funnier comments were:

  • O’Connell, who is in San Diego County this week to teach history classes in Chula Vista’s Sweetwater Union High School District, told area educators that the state’s education system is headed in the right direction and that “the best is yet to come.”
  • “We’ve gone from appalling to adequate in terms of school facilities,” O’Connell told the group of about 35 educators. “I’m convinced the table is set. We need the nourishment. That’s what the budget battles are about.”

It is a pretty short article, but in several places he’s talking about fighting with the Governor over Prop 98, school bonds getting passed
