Fort Hood soldiers were in a combat zone

Last week, I heard KFI's Bryan Suits, an Iraq veteran discussing the possibility that the Fort Hood victims wouldn't receive the Purple Heart because the award is only given to those who are injured as a result of enemy combat. I found that an appalling idea. Suit's point was that since the Army wasn't going to call Major Hassan's actions a terrorist attack but the actions of a single crazy person, the victims were going to be ineligible for the award.

In my mind, the moment that Major Hassan picked up that weapon and began firing at American soldiers, he became the enemy, every bit as much as those taking the same actions in Iraq or Afghanistan. That he might be later determined to be insane or that he might not have received detailed instructions from Al Queda to institute this attack doesn't change it from a terrorist attack to a police matter.

On this day when I struggle to find anything good to say about our elected officials, I am pleased to report that Congressman John Carter, R-Texas, has introduced the Ford Hood Families Benefits Protection Act, which would allow the Fort Hood victims and their families to receive the same benefits as those lost or injured in other combat situations.

I'm writing my member congress asking him to become a co-sponsor and support the bill. I'd urge you to do the same. Regardless of your political views, our men and women of the armed forces deserve our support, particularly in this matter.
